What is the complexity of the Romanian language?
Romanian is the most unique language from the entire Roman group (French, Spanish, Italian). He has his own unique style, which has features of several other languages at once, who influenced his development. Namely, the language of the Balkans, such as Greek language, Albanian, Bulgarian language, Macedonian language and others)
Romanian language is very interesting, but, like any language, he has his difficulties.
Here are a few points, which may cause difficulties:
- Grammar: Some aspects of Romanian grammar may be more difficult, than other languages. For example, five cases: nominative, genitive, dative, accusative and vocative. And the conjugation of verbs in these cases also needs to be mastered.
- Articles: Romanian has definite and indefinite articles. The definite article varies depending on the gender and number of the noun. This is different from some languages, where the article remains unchanged, from English, For example.
- Pronunciation Romanian sounds can be a challenge. Since there are special letters with diacretic marks: ă, â, î, AND, Þ. But don’t worry, with us this is completely surmountable!
Dictionary and vocabulary: Although Romanian shares many words with other Romance languages, Some unique words and expressions may seem difficult at first.
Important to remember, that any language can be mastered over time, especially if you approach learning with passion and enjoyment. And don’t forget, what’s wrong experienced ECOLE teachers, speaking Romanian makes the task much easier.

Any questions?
Frequently Asked Questions
Romanian language is similar to other Romance languages: Italian, Spanish, French and Portuguese.
So, we can say that Romanian is “related” to these other languages. It shares common roots and similar fundamentals, but of course, each language has its own peculiarities and unique features. If you are familiar with any of these languages, you might find some similar words or even understand some expressions in Romanian!
In fact, Romanian and Moldovan were 99% similar to each other. Their similarity is due to their common history and culture. The words and grammar in both languages are the same.
The term “Moldovan” is sometimes used to refer to the variant of Romanian spoken in Moldova. However, most linguists consider the two to be virtually identical, and the differences are limited to some variations in vocabulary and pronunciation of some words.
But! In March 2023, Moldovan President Maia Sandu signed a decree to change the official name of the state language to “Romanian” in order to put an end to all disagreements about whether it is Moldovan or Romanian 😊
This decision is aimed at uniting people in the face of Russian aggression and security threats. The President believes that the use of the term “Moldovan” was an artificial division of the nation. Now Moldova emphasizes its identity by uniting with more than 27 million Romanian-speaking people around the world. It could also be a step toward close cooperation with Romania, a member of the European Union and NATO.
So, officially, the Moldovan language no longer exists 😉
Romanians usually understand and speak Romanian. It is the mother tongue of most Romanians and is the official language in Romania and Moldova.
However, many Romanians can also understand and speak Russian, especially in the older generation or in areas where Russian has left its mark due to historical circumstances.
Young people in Romania usually learn English in schools, and English is becoming more common in communication. Although Russian can be understood and used in conversations, Romanian remains the primary and national language.
If you already know other Romance languages such as French, Italian or Spanish, you may find it easier to master Romanian.
Beginners can usually reach a basic level in conversation in a few months of regular lessons. But to become more fluent and have a deeper understanding of the language, it will take longer – from a year to several years.
Our students can reach level B2 in a year. So sign up for a trial lesson and you won’t recognize yourself in a year!
